Upcoming

Hey guys!

It’s that time of year again, university deadline time. sorry I haven’t been blogging a lot!
I have been working on my story still, the one about superpowers. It’s based in a parallel universe and is sounding pretty awesome so far.

Not long now, I promise.

The Wait
BY GARY R. HESS

Time Clicks as I await
The hour ends before my take
Sitting, thinking, waiting; my mind escapes

The day grows old as night passes
Wolves crying, coyotes howling; anticipating
Watching, staring, seeing — nothing

Silence begins the day
as morning comes without notice
Tears begin to fall, slowly

The day moves on without hope
Wishing to be what is not to be

The sun moves to its peak
without a whisper or retreat

Time moving, but still empty
Stomach aching, curling
Still waiting

Paradise – it’s a funny thing, isn’t it?

What is anyone’s ‘paradise‘?

It’s odd, something can mean so much to one person and absolutely nothing to another.

Someone’s paradise may seem strange to you, but to them – it would mean the world.

I’ll tell you mine.

My paradise would be me and everybody I love in my life, all sitting on a beach by a campfire, all of the animals and children would be happy and messing about, each animal would be running free and not suffering. We’d be drinking tea and wine, listening to cheesy music and not having a care in the world.

What would your paradise be?

Think to yourself, it could be a way of life, a scene, a moment, anything; its all yours. If you’d like, you could share it on here! I’d love to read it.

Why do I ask?

Because, it’s nice to know how different people think.

I’m feeling inspired.

Searching for Paradise – Part of Chapter 1 – Emerald Eyes

Chapter 1 – Emerald Eyes

The day the new island was discovered, the world was captivated. Everybody was glued to the news, waiting for the latest update. Cassie sat at the table, a glass of sparkling water in one hand, her favourite newspaper The Sovereign in the other. She carefully skimmed through it, hoping to find the most up to date bulletin on the new island. “Jacob, come here! Quick! Quick! Hurry!” Cassie bellowed. Jacob sprinted down the stairs and was at Cassie’s side within a millisecond. “What is it? Are you okay?” he checked her over, then sighed, realising she was talking about the new island again. “Look, ouch, get off, I’m fine! It’s about the island!” she thrust the newspaper in his face, barely even noticing his concern. “I know Cassie, it’s interesting” he lied. He didn’t really care about the new island, he was just concerned about his best friend, Cassie.

Aitrione, the tiny planet that Cassie and Jacob lived on, contained four islands. Each island had a name – Ferer’s Reef, Breque Islet, Irf Key and Klian Holm. Cassie and Jacob lived in Ferer’s Reef; it had the best beaches of all the islands, they mainly survived on fish, rice and fruit. Cassie and Jacob lived in a small town called Jericho Bay, home of the most golden beach on Aitrione. Jacob had always loved the beach, he remembered being young and selling necklaces made of shells to people on the beach with his mother. His family were not rich, and made a reasonable living by organising community barbeques, selling jewellery and his father’s furniture store which sold expensive, hand crafted wooden furniture. Jacob had never wanted for much, he enjoyed learning as much as he could about the history of the world. Cassie never understood why Jacob cared, she was always taught by her father that science was the future, and to forget the past. Her father was a doctor, and her mother an artist – which always seemed an odd combination. They had a more generous income than Jacob, but her father was a man of great pride, and would never let his own income define him or his family.

The new island was a big deal for Cassie, her Mum had passed away three years ago when she was 20. Despite what she said, Jacob didn’t believe that she was “just fine, so leave me alone”, as she so graciously put it. She’d been trying to find something to keep her occupied for the past few years, this ranged from sewing, knitting, hiking to the top of a mountain, University, even becoming a qualified florist! Cassie and Jacob had known one another since school when they were both 14. Jacob was in a group of boys and played in a band, and Cassie was in a group with a few girls and played in the school netball team. She never really enjoyed girly things, and much preferred the company of boys.

As they lay on the sofa, Jacob played with Cassie’s long, brunette hair, breathing in the scent of her mango and papaya shampoo. “Cassie, are you okay?” he asked, already knowing the answer to this question he asked daily. “Yes, Jacob, I’m fine. I just want to know about this new island! It could hold so many secrets, so many great things!” she laughed, pulling her head to turn to Jacob. He sighed inwardly, knowing that she was not fine at all. Jacob had always had a soft spot for Cassie, from the moment he saw her at school. She looked so poised, he thought back. She was wearing her school uniform with style; she walked at a fast but relaxed pace, her posture oozed confidence, her long, wavy brunette hair in a high ponytail, her skirt just short enough to show her bronzed legs, and her yellow and green tie done up perfectly, surprisingly. Cassie didn’t like to follow the rules. Looking at her now, he noticed sadness in her deep emerald eyes. He had always loved Cassie, for as long as he remembered. Over the countless girlfriends he’d had, the unnecessary heartbreak he’d caused, and the repeated sentence “she’s just my friend!” to his family who loved to tease the teenage Jacob. Cassie always pretended not to notice Jacob’s affection for her. She was always pre-occupied with something or the other, plus, she always stood by her saying “Romance is boring” which annoyed Jacob, because he knew she was wrong.

Cassie lay comfortably on Jacob’s legs as they both watched the Friday night news bulletin, he stroked her soft hair, occasionally glancing at just how beautiful she looked in her rose red nightdress and fluffy dressing gown. He couldn’t help but stare, he knew she’d kill him if she caught him looking. The newsreader read monotonously “The new island is just off the shore from Ferer’s Reef, it is said to be similar in size, but much of it will not be explored for at least six years, due to limited research funds, and fears of unknown species on the new island. With us is Proffessor Adam Cossinger; now Proffessor, what are your thoughts on t-” Cassie hurled the remote onto the floor, switching the TV off as it crashed, batteries flying everywhere.

Woah! Chill out Cas, what’s gotten into you?!” Jacob shook his head, moving an angry Cassie from his knee. She scowled at him, folding her arms in annoyance. “It’s stupid, Jake. Why aren’t they exploring it?! I want to see what’s there. What if there are new species, cures for disease, or god knows what there?! I will find out what’s there, with or without the permission of the government. I mean it.” she stood up, looking out of the window as if the island would somehow magically appear right there and then. Jacob burst with laugher “Cassandra, I’ve been taking you seriously for the past ten years, no matter what it is; from being a florist to climbing that bloody mountain, but this is just ridiculous. I love you Cassie, but you have to grow up!” he shook his head, running his hands through his hair. Not many people would have taken her so seriously, but Jacob knew what Cassie was capable of, he’d seen her do things nobody would believe.
